We have just received word that Falken intend to bring in their winter tyre patterns into the UK from October 2011.

Following one of the harshest winters on record, winter tyres grew in popularity and all wholesalers ran out of stocks within weeks. As a result of this, Falken have agreed to bring in their winter tyre range (which is already available in other parts of the EU) to the UK and distribute them via their existing dealer network.

Why are we so obsessed with cars? For some they are status symbols, security measures, a man's best friend, convenient extras and more. Whilst the UK has never had quite the same relationship with the machines as the US, where the motor industry has drastically influenced the development of the economy, urban planning and consumerism, the British isles nevertheless has one of the highest rates of cars per square mile. Several families own upwards of two cars; a leafy corner of Kent has the highest density of open top cars in the world (even beating the sunny climes of Beverley Hills, California).

However, after huge booms in car sales in the recovery of the post-WW2 economy, and another surge in power-hungry 1980s and affluent 1990s, the reign supreme of the motor vehicle in its existing form seems to be coming to an end, with car sales dropping significantly and several car manufacturing plants shutting their doors.

A lot of this can be put down to the global recession but with increasing questions over their environmental impact, not to mention the projected shortage of gas and oil in the coming decades, one could be forgiven for thinking that we could be witnessing the beginning of the end for the motorcar, in its existing form at least. Indeed, behind closed doors car companies like Honda and BMW are busy designing new hybrid cars that will run on alternative fuel sources and be much kinder to the environment. That said, until these new cars are ready drivers will continue to use their existing vehicles and the roads will still be humming with engine upon engine of petrol vehicle.

Falken Presents the New FK-452 to the International Press

Over 40 journalists from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Spain and England travelled to Augsburg on a sunny Thursday to attend the European premiere of the Falken FK-452. The press representatives could look forward to a whole day at the excellently prepared ADAC test circuit, to submit Falken's new flagship tyre to tough and thorough testing.

The wet skidpad, the slope, an array of slalom courses or the aquaplaning basin - whatever the category, Falken's new tyre delivers a convincingly balanced performance plus the legendary Falken grip. Eight test vehicles from BMW and Audi were in the starting blocks, enabling journalists to test the tyre's quality on both front and rear wheel drive vehicles. Their unanimous opinion? An out-standing tyre that really lives up to the promises of top-class quality made throughout its five-year development. The FK-452 is available at European dealers from 2006 in an impressive 74 sizes from 16" to 22".

A special highlight was still to come, harking back to the early years of Falken, which - a little-known fact - began life as an aircraft tyre manufacturer around 60 years ago. At nearby Augsburg Airfield, five stunt planes were lined up and ready. Almost all the attendees leapt to the challenge and squeezed themselves into the cramped cockpit of the little aerobatic aircraft. They were whisked off by experienced stunt pilots to take a trip into the third dimension - the ultimate Falken kick!

Not everybody knows about Sports Utility Vehicles (SUV), let alone knew what it was. Today, however, the market for rough-terrain, chunky and expensive sports utility vehicles is booming - take the BMW X5, Porsche Cayenne, VW Touareg or Volvo XC90. The new LA/AT T-110 is Falken's response to the growing demand for SUV tyres. This new multipurpose tyre has a specialized compound that makes it perfect for all-year driving, but also for alternative road and terrain use.

In designing the carcass structure and tread pattern, Falken's engineers took note of the fact that in Germany in particular, SUV drivers love to push engines to their limits on motorways, and speeds well above 200 km/h are child's play for the powerful SUVs. Here the LA/AT T-110 reveals its exceptional directional stability both on straight motorways and in cornering. Everyone knows the problem. The tyres on the drive shaft wear down faster than the ones that only have to "roll along". To achieve even wear, specialists recommend changing over your tyres at least once, or better twice. But when is the best time?

Now Falken has developed a new system that warns drivers about tyre wear. "Special Eyes" take the guesswork out of tyre changeovers with reliable indicators that are actually built into the tyres themselves. The Falken Sincera SN-828 incorporates special depressions in the face of the tread, that change their shape as tyre tread reduces with wear.

In new Falken SN-828 Sincera tyres, when one third of the tyre's lifespan is over they change shape and become square, showing that it's time for the first tyre change. When the square depressions are no longer visible and only the smooth tread can be seen. The second tyre change should be made and the tyre enters the last third of its life.

But in addition to this technical innovation, the Falken Sincera SN-828 is generally a durable, comfortable and safe tyre for compact and smaller midsize cars. Its new silica compound optimises driving performance in wet conditions and increases resistance to abrasion.
